FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT TVR
TVR was named after the initials from the founders Christan name - TreVor Wilkinson
who left the Company In 1962.
Trevor's first vehicle was manufactured in 1947 In Blackpool. T
TVR manufacturer some 85% of the entire vehicle in house
TVR Is still privately owned by Peter Wheeler the Chairman who bought the company
in 1981.
In 1984 TVR were manufacturing 7 vehicles per week with 82 staff.
In 1988 TVR are manufacturing 15 vehicles per week with 160 staff in both cases
almost an 90% increase.
TVR manufacturer all its seats, trim, electncs. suspension. chassis, bodyshells
and being small can offer a customer the ability to completely hand pick the paint
and leather colour options along with anything else he or she wants in the new vehicle.
TVR sell most of the current production In England and Europe although the models
are available in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and New Zealand.
TVR produce a Coupe model although 98% of current production is the Convertible.
The Convertible has an unique patented roof design. This allows it to be rendered
completely opened and closed in mere seconds. When erected it is virtually a hard
top with a solid roof structure over the drivers head.
In their Vee 8 model TVR utilise 3500, 3900 and 4200 cc fuel injected engines. These
produce 200 bhp, 275 bhp and a staggering 300 bhp.
Vee 8 engines are not new to TVR. In the early 1960's TVR fitted the 4.7 litre Cobra
engine to a TVR and it was a sell out in the U.S.A.
TVR were the first manufacturer to fit a turbo charged engine to a production car.
This appeared in 1975 and featured a 3 litre 265 bhp Vee 6 powerplant.
TVR were the first manufacturer to utilise the space age materials of Kevlar and
Carbon fibre in a production sportscar. This was in the 420 S.E.A.C. (Special Equipment
Aramid Composite) launched in 1986. Here the entire bodyshell was made out of the
two materials and achieved a weight reduction of some 300 lbs. over the standard
bodyshell.
TVR compete in the British Sportscar Racing Championships and achieved great success
with the 420 S.E.A.C. during 1986/87 seasons. 25 entered races saw 19 wins and the
Championship title.
An international race in Macau, Hong Kong before Christmas 1987 saw the new S model
racer take first place and the 420 second. Other competitions featured Porsche,
Ferrari and BMW.
TVR were the first Company to feature completely nude female models in a marketing
exercise at a London Motor Show in 1973. This gimmick was quickly banned in future
by the organisers.
